IIWE Summer Programme 2010
Bayleigh Petchell, a Waikato University student, attended the International Institute of Women in Engineering (IIWE) summer program 3-23 July 2010 in Paris. The topic of the program was Global Sustainable Practices, and included industrial visits to L’Oreal, Société Général and UNESCO; lectures; workshops; and practical projects.
A highlight was meeting Hélène Langevin-Joliot who was president of the program this year, You may know that Madam Langevin-Joliot is the granddaughter of Marie and Pierre Curie and the daughter of Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie who won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. Madam Langevin-Joliot gave us an inspirational talk, her words to us were “work hard, adapt, and change the world for the better.”
“I’m so glad I was able to travel to Paris to attend the IIWE summer program. I really learnt a lot about France, French culture and history….increased my value as an engineer, increased my confidence in myself and made an international network of female engineers.”
