Criteria

The Board invites well-developed projects which feature an element of exchange between the two countries and which will encourage ongoing contact between people. Projects which are likely to benefit the wider community are favoured.

• Applicants must be New Zealand or French citizens, or be normally resident in New Zealand, France or the French Pacific Territories.

• Projects must meet the objectives of the Fund and therefore should:
  - encourage ongoing contact and  exchanges between the people of  France and New Zealand,
 particularly young people;

- promote the exchange of  information and knowledge about  each country;
 - enhance the understanding of  respective lifestyles, cultures  and physical environment.

• Priority will normally be given to projects which are 'visible' and which have a strong people-to-people content.

Funding

• The value of each grant will be determined by the Joint Board at its sole discretion and the Board's decision is final;
• Grants will not include provision for the payment of salaries and administrative overheads, such as rents and utilities;
• Grants will not be given for commercial purposes, or to buy assets and property, or for a political objective;
• Grants will normally be made for projects that end within twelve months, although provision may be made for longer-term projects;

• Grants are not made retrospectively;
• Applications for funding for individual travel and study and those which are eligible for funding from other sources are unlikely to be given high priority.

Applications should provide evidence of capability in these respects;

• Written reports and financial statements will be required at the end of the period of the grant, or at intervals as the Board may prescribe.
• The Board reserves the right to terminate grants if the project is postponed or cancelled or if performance is deemed by the Board to be unsatisfactory.

Closing date:

The year for grants runs from 1 July to 30 June of the following year.

The closing date for applications each year is 31 March.

Funding for Education Exchanges

Applications for grants by New Zealand school groups planning exchange visits with France should reach the Board Secretary by 31 March each year.

Applications from French groups should be sent to the French Board of the New Zealand/France Friendship Fund.

• Funding is given only to NZ schools involved in exchanges with metropolitan France. Grants are not currently available for visits to New Caledonia and Tahiti.
• The school groups applying must show that they are able to meet most of the costs of their side of the exchange.
• While most applications are expected to come from French classes, other groups of secondary school students with specific projects in mind will be considered for funding, as long as they are travelling as an official group and accompanied by a teacher.
• A French school should ideally be closely involved in arrangements, with the intention that the French group would
later be hosted in New Zealand (or vice versa).

To be successful, applications should show a strong people-to-people content in the planned itinerary, outlining shared activities, homestays etc, with the host school(s).
